“Free” vault apps pay for themselves somehow. Here is what to check before you put real photos in one.
1. Is it encrypted, or just hidden?
Many free vaults only move files into a folder the Photos app does not show. Look for the word encryption and for an explanation of where the key comes from.
2. Can you always get your files out?
The catch in a lot of vaults: once you pass the free limit, or a subscription lapses, export stops working until you pay. Your own photos become the ransom. Vaultpod’s rule: viewing, exporting and deleting always work; only adding more is paused past the free limit.
3. Is backup free?
A vault without backup is a vault that disappears with the phone. Check that backup and restore are not paid features.
4. Ads
Ad networks in a privacy app are a contradiction. A vault with ads has an SDK inside it that reports back to someone.
5. Accounts
No account means no password to leak and no server holding your keys. It also means the recovery phrase is on you.
Vaultpod’s free plan: 3 vaults, 250 files, 15 videos, full backup and export, no ads, no account.
