Moving your photo vault to a new iPhone, step by step

Exactly how to move an encrypted vault to a new iPhone without losing a file: backup, test, restore, then delete.

  1. On the old iPhone, check Backup. Open Vaultpod, Backup. It must say On with a recent time. Tap Back up now if not and wait for it to finish.
  2. Run Test restore. Same screen, type the recovery phrase. It must say the backup opens and every file is in iCloud.
  3. On the new iPhone, sign in to the same iCloud account and install Vaultpod.
  4. On the lock screen, tap Use recovery phrase, then Restore from iCloud. The backup downloads. Type the phrase and draw a new pattern for this phone.
  5. Repeat the phrase step for each vault you have. Each vault has its own phrase.
  6. Only now delete the app from the old iPhone.

Why a new pattern?

The pattern key is mixed with a secret that never leaves the old phone, on purpose, so a copy of the files cannot be attacked offline. The new phone has a new secret, so the vault needs a new pattern. The phrase works everywhere.

Shortcut: iCloud Keychain recovery

If you turned on “Recover with pattern via iCloud Keychain” in Backup, the new phone opens the vault with the pattern alone. The toggle explains the trade: anyone with your Apple ID and your pattern could then do the same.
